Definition
Your ingrown toenail began as a result of the edge of the toenail irritating or puncturing the skin next to it. This is caused by improper cutting of the toenail, an injury to the toe, or tight shoes. If left untreated your ingrown toenail will rapidly become infected.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain
- Redness
- Swelling
- Bleeding
- Pus from the skin along side of your toenail
Treatment
In most cases your ingrown toenail will need to be surgically removed. Sometimes trimming the nail away from the skin can relieve the pain and pressure. Antibiotics may also be necessary.
